Questions about value-added and credit courses

What is a value-added course?
A value-added course is a short, skills-focused course a college runs alongside the prescribed curriculum, usually to cover industry tools and practices the syllabus does not reach. It is typically certified but not always credited.
What is the difference between a value-added course and a credit course?
A credit course carries academic credit and appears on the student’s transcript, so it must map to the university or autonomous body’s credit framework in hours, assessment and outcomes. A value-added course has no such constraint and can be shorter and more flexible. The teaching content is often similar; the paperwork and assessment requirements are not.
Can these courses be run for academic credit at an autonomous college?
Yes. Autonomous colleges set their own credit structure, which makes it straightforward to map a course to a defined number of credits with the required contact hours, internal assessment and end-semester evaluation. Affiliated colleges usually run the same content as a value-added course instead.
Who delivers the courses — college faculty or your trainers?
Usually our trainers, with faculty co-ordinating. Where a department wants to take the course over in later semesters, we run a faculty development programme first so the teaching staff can deliver it themselves.
Do students receive a certificate?
Yes, on completion and on meeting the assessment criteria. Certification that is handed out for attendance alone is worth nothing to a recruiter, so completion is tied to assessed work.
